I bought a book on Rothko because his work reminded me so much of traditional quilt patterns. I was horridly disappointed in his work, so boring. I thought I was just missing the stitching a quilter would put on such plain designs. But your explanation of the difference seeing the work in person makes so much sense - I know that to be true!

Love your last paragraph - I've been collecting quotations about this very thing and will be sharing them soon on my blog.

I use this method a lot when I mount onto a background piece that has been stiffened but not quilted and edges finished pillow turn method. I love it. Those yarns just add so much to the piece and you are right, no fussing with turning binding around corners or that second round of stitching binding requires.

BJ, I have also become fond of "other-than-binding" edge finishes for art quilts. I have been using several rows of zig-zag as well as attaching rat-tail cording with the zigzag. On one piece I tied the rat-tail cord at the four corners and left tails hanging. These are on my blog in August under Ghost Quilting: http://www.marthaginn.blogspot.com/
I also like a facing instead of the binding and have used it a lot lately, too.
